*Two possible options exist when a student may have caused harm, or is talking about harm to self:
1. Situations requiring an immediate response;
· The student has inflicted harm to self that a reasonable person would regard as serious
· The student is believed to have ingested substance(s) of which the amount and effect is uncertain
· The student has threatened harm to self and has been using alcohol/drugs
· The extent of self-injury is unknown and the student is unresponsive to stimuli
Responses to the above situations involve contacting MUW Security at 241-7777 and 911. A reporting call must be made to the Assistant Director of Counseling Services (Deanna Wilkins) (662)329-7127 or (205)310-8491(ER only) who informs the Director of Community Living (Chris Holland) (662)241-6339 or (662)549-3192 (ER only).
2. Suicide gestures or threats where imminent danger is unclear, including evidence of recent self-inflicted superficial scratches or cuts, and/or statements of an intention to harm oneself.
Responses to the above situations involve contacting the Assistant Director of Community Living, Counseling Services (Deanna Wilkins).
· If safety is not an issue, the counselor will set an appointment at the Department of Community Living, Counseling Services with the student during the next working day, informing the student that s (he) is expected to attend. Non-compliance may be considered a judicial violation.
· If the student is uncooperative, and fails to respond when informed that her/his cooperation is required, the Vice President of Student Services is contacted.
· If the counselor determines that safety is or may be an issue, the admissions counselor at Willowbrook or Community Counseling is contacted. An assessment at either outside referral determines if the student’s safety is at risk. If no risk is determined, the student will be scheduled for an appointment during the next working day at the Department of Community Living, Counseling Services.
