Mississippi University for Women’s Music Therapy Clinic was founded in 2020, right on the cusp of the COVID-19 pandemic, which halted any plans for offering programs to the general public.

However, with things seeming more akin to “normal” now, the clinic is looking to kick off its planned music program for young children, Little Music Makers. The program will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 12.

“Little Music Makers is a new program being offered by The W Music Therapy Clinic. Now that things are back to normal our goal is to be able to welcome individuals and groups to campus to provide clinical services, support groups and other music experiences for the community,” said Carmen Osburn, professor of music and director of music therapy.

Little Music Makers is a six-week program for children aged four and under. Meetings will be held each Thursday from 9:30 -10:15 a.m.

While the program is free, spots are limited, and registration is necessary. Only 10 children will be admitted.

Parents and guardians are also included in the program.

“In fact, these sessions will involve the adults as much as the children. It will be a time for them to bond and interact with their child through a variety of fun singing and instrument-playing music experiences.  No previous music experience is required from the adults,” Osburn said.

The program will feature activities aimed at early childhood development and tie them together with music-making.

“We will also be targeting age-appropriate developmental goals such as motor control, communication, emotional expression, cognitive development and pre-academic skills for the children.  Young children respond to music with a natural enthusiasm that helps them learn and develop skills quickly, so getting them involved in active music making can be important in their development.  This group is inclusive for children of all abilities, and those with special needs are welcome and encouraged to come!” Osburn said.

The clinic is located in the former Speech-Language Pathology space in the Cromwell Communications Center, located at the corner of Ninth St. South and Sixth Avenue South.
