The W establishes accessibility navigator position

Mississippi University for Women has established navigator for accessibility and student success services as a new position for the 2024-25 school year.

Tequila McCoy, former student support specialist, will step into the role. She is tasked with ensuring The W experience is just as accessible for disabled students as nondisabled students.

“She will lead the campus accessibility committee and sponsor a new student organization called Owl-Ability for disabled students and advocates for accessibility. She will also manage all student accommodations from their initial introduction to campus through graduation by developing a one-on-one relationship with the students and coordinating with faculty and staff on their behalf,” said Dr. Clear Moore, director of the Student Success Center at The W, the department which houses the office.

The first act of the new navigator was hosting a Summer Accessibility Workshop. The workshop, which was attended by W faculty and staff, East Mississippi Community College staff and community professionals, focused on best practices for students with visual impairments. The goal is to make the workshop an annual event, focusing on a different disability each year.

The creation of the new navigator position highlights The W’s commitment to providing a quality education for all.

“It shows the university’s commitment to serve all students and shows the priority placed on making campus accessible to all,” Moore said.
