The W celebrates National Transfer Student Week Oct. 21-25
Mississippi University for Women will celebrate National Transfer Student Week, Oct. 21-25, with five days of campus events.
In partnership with the National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students (NISTS) and universities across the nation, The W will highlight transfer students and celebrate their unique journeys.
“Transfer students are often older than traditional freshmen, may work fulltime or have a family to care for. They are committed and determined to finish their degree and already have a start from their previous institution. We celebrate Transfer Student Week to spotlight their unique journeys, grit and heart,” said Clear Moore, director of the Student Success Center. “We want them to know that we value all they bring and want to encourage them through this special week of events”
On Monday, Oct. 21, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., transfer students are invited to “Coffee: The Key to Success,” to enjoy complimentary coffee and breakfast while signing a banner featuring the logo of their previous institution. This event will take place at Reneau Hall.
The Office of Career Services and Professional Development will host “Finding Internships and Jobs by Leveraging Handshake” Tuesday, Oct. 22. The workshop is designed to help transfer students explore internship opportunities that could lead to future job prospects. The workshop will be offered both in-person at the Fant Library’s Active Learning Room and online via Zoom at 4 p.m.
Wednesday, October 23, brings “Transfer W Wednesday,” a celebration of transfer students featuring snacks, button-making and bracelet-making activities. This event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Owls Nest
The Student Success Center presents, “Tacos with Transfers” Thursday, Oct. 24. The session will offer tips and tricks to prepare for advising and pre-registration for next semester. In addition to a light lunch, students will have an opportunity to chat with college navigators and discuss goals for a successful spring semester. This meeting will also be available virtually for students at a distance.
At 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 24, OWL Athletics Transfer Recognition Night will honor transfer athletes and all transfer students at the volleyball game in Pohl Gym at 7 p.m. Students with a valid ID will receive a free hot dog, chips and drink.
The Transfer Champions nominated throughout the week will be celebrated on SSC’s social media channels Friday, Oct. 25. They will receive a card and a sweet treat delivered to their offices.
Week-long Activities:
- Daily Spotlight: The SSC will feature an inspiring transfer student each day on social media.
- Transfer Champion Nominations: Students can nominate faculty or staff who have made a difference in their transfer experience. Winners will be announced on Friday.
- Keys to Success: Transfer students are invited to share their “keys to success” on a poster that will be displayed in the SSC.
- Transfer Student Advisory Council Applications: Students are encouraged to apply to join this council, which will play a crucial role in shaping future transfer student programming.
