Graduate students in Mississippi University for Women’s Department of Speech-Language Pathology recently completed the LSVT LOUD Certification course, which gives them a leg up on the job market post-graduation.

According to the official site, LSVT LOUD is an evidence-based therapy technique used to assist patients with Parkinson’s Disease and other neurological conditions in being heard and understood.

“After completing the course, students have a highly regarded certification which gives them a head start on their career.  LSVT offers a highly discounted rate for students.  After graduation, students are able to upgrade to professional status without re-taking the course, so this saves students time and money when they are beginning their career,” said Jennifer Pounders, clinical director for The W Speech and Hearing Center.

The program is offered to second year graduate students at The W. Students complete the online training during the summer before they begin their off-campus practicum.

“This training helps equip our students for working with individuals with Parkinson’s Disease and other neurological deficits who are working towards using their voice while speaking at a more normal loudness level, as they communicate with people at home, work and within their communities,” said Dr. Catherine L. Cotton, interim department chair of the Department of Speech-Language Pathology.

The course includes one month of one-hour sessions. There are four sessions per week. Additionally, students are given daily homework and carryover exercises.

“We are proud to offer access to LSVT LOUD online training to all of our graduate students as they are developing their professional knowledge and clinical skills,” Cotton said.
