W hosts ‘The Exploring Health Care Pathways Outreach Program’

Mississippi University for Women invites local high school juniors and seniors to learn about careers in health care Saturday, Feb. 4 at Turner Hall. 

In partnership with the University of Mississippi Medical Center, students will have the opportunity to learn about careers in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, health-related professions (medical laboratory science, radiologic sciences, health administration, health informatics and information management, medical scribe specialist, occupational therapy, and physical therapy) or medical research.

Participants will rotate through six sessions, each targeting a specific area of health care and its corresponding school. Session leaders will use activities and discussions to explain the undergraduate curriculum, shadowing and volunteer experience appropriate to prepare students for professional studies in that area. The sessions also will share expectations of pre-health professions students regarding both the application process and success in their chosen professional program of study.

The half-day, free event includes lunch, and students need to register at The Exploring Health Care Pathways Program Interest Form. The last day to register is Monday, January 30th.

Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to tour the University’s campus and speak to admissions representatives from The W.

The Office of Admissions and the Improving Primary Care for the Rural Community through Medical Education (IMPACT the RACE) Program at UMMC collaborated to create “The Exploring Health Care Pathways Outreach Program.” The program is designed to inspire Mississippi high school students to pursue careers in health-related professions.
