Carl Brown Photography

This exhibition of photographs by Carl Brown, a Columbus native who recorded life in his hometown during the 1940s and 1950s, is presented in conjunction with the Columbus – Lowndes Public Library. The photographs are from the collection of the Library.

As quoted in the library material, Carl Eugene Brown first opened a photography studio in Columbus around 1946.  Over four decades as a photographer, Brown captured numerous changes and transformations to the Lowndes County area through the lens of his camera.  The opening of a store, the installation of telephone lines, and the construction of important buildings were all recorded by Brown.  This exhibit showcases some of his early work from the 1940s and 1950s and offers viewers a glimpse into a bygone era.

Summer 2022

The university galleries, located on the first floor of Summer Hall, are open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., following the university calendar. The Galleries and the gallery talks are free and open to the public.
