Serena Williams, Armor, and Androgyny by Linda Stein

March 3 – April 4

New York artist Linda Stein describes herself as a feminist artist, an educator, and a writer. Stein describes her artistic goal as focusing on “oppression of the Other through the lens of anti-bullying and social justice.” Traumatized by the events of 9/11, Stein writes that after the destruction of the Twin Towers, her artwork became armor-like as a means of protection. She gradually incorporated pop culture references into her work to address issues of power and vulnerability.

She is the Founding President of Have Art Will Travel!, Inc., a non-profit corporation that “inspires the Bullied, Bully and Bystander to become the Brave Up-stander and Everyday Hero.” It was through Have Art Will Travel! that The W Galleries was gifted the set of prints in this exhibition in 2024. The prints were selected based on the demographics of our student body.

While the donation was arranged through Have Art Will Travel!, the donation was funded through the generosity of feminist historian Dr. Barbara Winslow.
