Artwork by Shawn L. Dickey

January 27 – February 21
Reception: February 6, 5:30 – 7:00pm

Shawn L. Dickey’s process involves both the role of synthesis and juxtaposition as fundamental practices in his artmaking. Synthesis, a fusion of ideas, and juxtaposition, arranging two or more elements to form a visual relationship, provide fertile ground for viewers to make comparisons and contrasts within the compositional structure of his artwork.

These color photographs, using paper cutouts captured with a shift-tilt lens, feature the synthesis of historic Japanese Ukiyo-e woodcut prints and contemporary Manga. He is intrigued by the visual and conceptual collision of the past and present in these works.
