Alternate Route Initial Licensure Program for MUW Seniors

All students must have active Watermark accounts while enrolled in the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program. Students needing new Watermark accounts will be assessed a program fee, currently $139.00, during their initial term of enrollment.

Apply for Graduate Coursework

An undergraduate student at MUW who has an overall 3.o GPA and who has completed 90 or more semester hours may receive written permission from the appropriate coordinator/director to take up to six hours of graduate courses. The student must maintain a 3.0 GPA while taking these courses. Any undergraduate student who enrolls in up to six graduate hours once completing at least 90 credit hours may apply the graduate credit earned towards the completion of their undergraduate degree.

Undergraduate students who have completed at least 90 credit hours with an overall GPA less than 2.75 but who have been determined by the program to be able to graduate with an overall GPA of 2.75 may be recommended by the program to take ED 549, ED 551, or ED 538.

Request for MAT Courses

The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) requires a minimum overall undergraduate GPA of 2.75 for licensure purposes. The School of Education cannot recommend anyone for licensure with a GPA less than 2.75. Students who have completed ED 549, ED 551, or ED 538 as MUW undergraduate students may be admitted to the MAT program with an overall GPA of 2.75. MUW students who have completed ED 549, ED 551, or ED 538 and seek admission tot the MAT program with a GPA less than 3.0 must complete Praxis Core or have earned an ACT composite score of 21 or higher prior to being admitted to the program.

Although they cannot “officially” apply for the MAT program until the degree date is posted on transcripts, they are encouraged to apply for the program, take the Praxis II Subject Area exam (see below), and submit all required documentation, except the transcript, by the application deadline during their final undergraduate semester. A note will be made that the official transcript will be sent as soon as it is available.

Alternate Route to Initial Licensure (MAT Program) Curriculum

Begin MAT Program as a Senior

With the support of their current academic advisor and a minimum GPA of 3.0, undergraduates at The W who are majoring in an MAT certification subject may take up to six graduate credit hours of MAT program initial-licensure coursework in the last year of their undergraduate program.

Take 2 of the following:

  • ED 538: Understanding Individual Learning Differences
  • ED 549: Instructional Assessment Practices and Procedures
  • ED 551: Managing the Instructional Environments

During Final Undergraduate Semester:

After Official MAT Program Admittance:

  • Take the final course of the required pre-internship courses: ED 538, ED 549, ED 551.

At this point, candidates are eligible for a 3-year, non-renewable Mississippi Educator License and should obtain a certified teaching position in the subject area and grade endorsed on their 3-year, non-renewable Mississippi Educator License.

Get a job as a Teacher:

Candidates are expected to identify and apply for potential full-time teaching positions in desired school districts, as this is required to complete ED 697: Internship in Master of Education.

Internship Phase

While completing their first-year teaching in an accredited school in the grade/s and subject area/s they are endorsed to teach on their MS Educator License, MAT students complete the two sections of ED 697, one per semester for two semesters.

After successfully completing both sections of ED 697, candidates are eligible for a 5-year, renewable, Class A Mississippi Educator License.

The above coursework counts as 12 of the required 30 credit hours toward the Master of Arts in Teaching degree.
