Franklin Academy is the Columbus Municipal School District (CMSD) Magnet School for Medical Sciences and Wellness. The Department of H&K partners with Franklin Academy to assist in reaching their "Wellness" objectives. Each year, Franklin Academy students are bussed to the Pohl Gym to complete the FitnessGram battery of health-related fitness assessments. The results are compiled and individual and group data are provided to the Franklin Physical Education staff.
Women's Health Awareness Week occurs in October of each year. This has been a collaborative effort with Baptist Memorial Hospital - Golden Triangle. Physicians, and other health-care professions present current relevant information about women's health issues. These events are open to the public and take place on The W campus.
The Department of H&K hosts the MUW Health Fair each February. This event is held in the Pohl Education Building gymnasium. Numerous health-care providers and practitioners disseminate current health-care information on a variety of topics. This event is open to the public and is very well attended.
The Department of H&K hosts the Miller-Burdeshaw Lecture Series in the spring of each academic year. The Miller-Burdeshaw Lecture is designed to bring to campus experts in one of the disciplines of Health & Kinesiology. The presenters provide current relevant information to our students. The Miller-Burdeshaw lecture Series is in memory and in honor of Dr. Mary Kate Miller and Dr. Dorothy Burdeshaw, two former heads of the Department of H&K.
