Department of Languages, Literature, & Philosophy
The Department of Languages, Literature and Philosophy provides a broad liberal arts education for all students. Our courses emphasize reading, writing, and critical thinking, as well as research, analysis, and creative expression.
With majors in English, Spanish, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and minors in Creative Writing, English, Foreign Languages, Philosophy, Religious Studies, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies , our students learn to analyze cultural texts, conduct scholarly research, think critically, and communicate effectively, while connecting their knowledge to the world at large.
Through our majors; minors; teacher certification in English and Spanish; concentrations in African American Literature, Creative Writing, Literature, and Professional Writing; and certificate programs in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) and Applied and Professional Ethics, our students prepare for a wide variety of professions and graduate studies.
Programs of Study
Historic Painter Hall
The Department of Languages, Literature, and Philosophy is located in Painter Hall. Constructed in 1922, Painter is on the National Register of Historic Places and is listed as a Mississippi Landmark. The hallowed halls of Painter are the very same Pulitzer-Prize wining author and alumna Eudora Welty walked as a student. The historic building is also home to our sister humanities department History, Political Sciences, and Geography.
