Soprano Dr. Susan Hurley is a performer and teacher who has performed in Europe and the United States in repertoire that ranges from opera and musical theatre to concert and recital literature. A prizewinner at the 2002 Meistersinger competition in Graz, Austria, she has sung over 20 principal operatic roles and appeared in several musical theatre productions. Roles she has performed include “Lucy” in The Telephone, “Zerbinetta” in Ariadne auf Naxos, “Gilda” in Rigoletto, and “Sister Constance” in Dialogues of the Carmelites, among others.
Dr. Hurley’s D.M.A. research was on the theories of Dr. Alfred Tomatis, founder of audio-psycho-phonology. She has since expanded her research to create an introductory workshop in Tomatis Listening, designed to actively explore the role of the ear in singing. She presented her first Singers and Sound workshop with the Valley of the Sun chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing in February 2016. In 2014, she founded an annual AIDS Quilt Songbook benefit concert series commemorating World AIDS Day in Phoenix, AZ. She was a stage director with the German Singer Summer advanced training program in Freiberg, Germany, and prior to coming to The W, taught at Arizona State University’s Herberger College Community School for the Arts in Tempe, AZ, and at San Jacinto College North in Houston, TX.
