Notes
Nel cor piú non mi sento – Giovanni Paisiello (1740-1816)
This aria from the Italian opera L’amor contrastato is sung by a young person who feels this new feeling of love but makes it out to be torment. She describes it as prickly and pinching.
*In my heart I no longer feel
the brilliance of youth;
the cause of my torment,
Love, it’s your fault!
You sting me, you poke me,
you pinch me, you bite me.
What thing is this, alas?
Have pity, pity, pity!
Love is that certain something
that drives me to despair!
* Singer Sticky Notes
Fischerweise – Franz Schubert (1797-1828)
*The fisherman is not plagued
by cares, grief or sorrow.
In the early morning he casts off
his boat with a light heart.
Round about, peace still lies
over forest meadow and stream,
with his song the fisherman
bids the golden sun awake.
He sings at his work
from a full vigorous heart.
His work gives him strength,
his strength exhilarates him.
Soon a bright multitude
will resound in the depths,
and splash
through the watery heavens.
But whoever wishes to set a net
needs good, dear eyes
must be as cheerful as the waves
and as free as the tide.
There on the bridge the shepherdess
is fishing. Cunning wench
leave off your tricks!
You won’t deceive this fish!
* Oxford Lieder
Voi che sapete – Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
This aria from Marriage of Figaro is sung by a young boy who has all of these feelings for women. In this scene, he is singing a song he wrote to the Countess, confessing his feelings in a childish manner. While he is doing so, she is most certainly interested in his performance.
*You who know what love is,
Women, see whether it’s in my heart,
What I am experiencing I will tell you,
It is new to me and I do not understand it.
I have a feeling full of desire,
That now, is both pleasure and suffering.
At first frost, then I feel the soul burning,
And in a moment I’m freezing again.
Seek a blessing outside myself,
I do not know how to hold it, I do not know what it is.
I sigh and moan without meaning to,
Throb and tremble without knowing,
I find no peace both night or day,
But even still, I like to languish.
You who know what love is,
Women, see whether it’s in my heart.

De los alamos vengo, madre – Joaquin Rodrigo (1901-1999)
I come from the poplars, mother,
from seeing the breezes stir them.
From the poplars of Seville
from seeing my sweet love
from seeing the breezes stir them.
Ave Maria – Franz Schubert (1797-1828)
This popular piece is a prayer to Mary the mother of Jesus.
*Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners
now and in the hour of our death. Amen.
* Liveabout
Healing – Hannah Heaton (b. 2000)
This piece is about a sad soul who doesn’t know what else to do except cry because they are so sad. While crying, they also ask when they can close these sad eyes for good.
Estrellita – Manuel Ponce (1882-1948)
*Little star from the distant sky
That watches my pain
That knows my suffering
Come down and tell me if you like me a little
Because I can’t live without your love
You are, Little star, my beacon of love
You know that I will soon die
Come down and tell me if you like me a little
Because I can’t live without your love

Come Down Angels – arr. Undine Smith Moore (1904-1989)
This spiritual is asking the angels to come down and let the saints come in. While I am loving to sing and shout about my God, I also love hearing sinners learn how to so the same.
There’s a Man Going Round Taking Names – arr. William Reber
This traditional spiritual talks about the man named Death taking the people I care about, causing me such pain while doing so.
Lord, I just can’t keep from cryin’ – arr. Margaret Bonds (1913-1972)
This traditional spiritual says that sometimes the singer just has to cry. Whether humming or folding my arms just to cry, I do it and I tell the Lord that I do.
My Soul’s Been Anchored in the Lord – arr. Florence B. Price (1887-1953)
This spiritual talks about how I pray everyday for my Lord and Savior. I pray until I reach my destination.
