Mississippi University for Women’s Community Read program and its partners will welcome the author of this year’s book, Alejandra Campoverdi, to campus for an event Thursday, March 20 at 6 p.m.

Taking place in Poindexter Hall on The W’s campus, “An Evening with Alejandra Campoverdi” will be a fireside-style discussion with the author in which she will talk about “First Gen: A Memoir,” the subject of the 2024-25 Community Read.

“We are thrilled to be hosting Alejandra Campoverdi on campus. First Gen has resonated widely with our community, and I’m excited that our students and members of our community will have the chance to hear and connect with the author in person. I would like to extend special thanks to President Miller and the Mississippi Humanities Council for making this event possible,” said Rachel Damms, co-chair of the Community Read.

Following the event, there will be a book signing and reception.

“An unflinching memoir about navigating social mobility as a first gen Latina, Alejandra Campoverdi’s ‘First Gen’ is both a riveting personal story and a broad examination of the unacknowledged emotional tolls of being a trailblazer,” reads the official description of the book on Campoverdi’s website.

The Community Read program seeks to bring The W and the Columbus community together for a shared learning experience. A book is selected and events are hosted throughout the year, beginning in the fall.

Partners of the program include The Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science, the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library, the City of Columbus and Friendly City Books.
