Mississippi spellers to face off at The W
Mississippi University for Women will once again be the host of the C Spire Foundation Mississippi Spelling Bee, Saturday, March 2.
According to Mississippi Spelling Bee Director Lois Kappler, 22 of the state’s top spellers will arrive on campus Friday and spend the day doing a variety of activities hosted by the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science. The spelling bee will begin at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, in Poindexter Hall.
The W has been the host of the bee since 2022, when it, along with other community sponsors, stepped up to save the bee. A partnership that has paid dividends.
“The partnership between the Mississippi Spelling Bee and The W is a match made in heaven. It brings talented students in grades fourth through eighth to a welcoming campus for the first college trip for most. They have the opportunity to visit MSMS and see first-hand an educational opportunity available to them. As an MUW graduate, ‘94, I know the value of a smaller college experience with quality programming, professors and opportunities, so I’m proud to have this partnership with my favorite campus!” said Kappler.
The top two spellers from Saturday’s competition will advance to Bee Week and compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, May 26-June 1 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland.
“A spelling bee is so much more than just spelling. A bee provides spellers the opportunity to build their confidence, public speaking skills and vocabulary while making friends and at the same time learning more about our language. It is exciting to provide a fun and positive Spelling Bee to our Mississippi students,” Kappler said.
