The W creates a campus and community band
Mississippi University of Women is searching for talented musicians in the Golden Triangle.
Open to all high school, college and adult band musicians, the Wind Ensemble (also known as the concert band) will meet in Shattuck Hall on The W’s campus on Mondays from 6– 8:30 p.m. in the fall, beginning Aug. 14.
“The Golden Triangle area has so many talented musicians that are looking for places to share their gifts. Having an ensemble where college, high school and community members come together results in the students seeing that making music is a lifelong activity, with high school students earning collegiate credit through dual enrollment and community members connecting with fellow musicians and taking time to do something fun to relax,” said Director of Bands Ginger Zingara.
The Wind Ensemble is open to musicians who play a wide range of band instruments, including flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone, euphonium, string bass, tuba and percussion. All musicians, whether in high school, college or adults, are encouraged to participate in this collaborative group, regardless of their skill level.
President Nora Miller said, “This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the talent of our students and community members. I look forward to enjoying the band’s performances.”
The music department at The W aims to empower students through the study of theory, history and aesthetics of performance. The department is committed to the development of dynamic personal experiences, providing students with the essential skills necessary to create, teach, perform and work in their chosen field.
“This step helps bring our entire community together and gives everyone in our area an opportunity to see what our music department offers, regardless of age or background,” said Dr. Julia Mortyakova, chair of the Department of Music at The W.
