Mississippi University for Women’s Department of Sciences and Mathematics is continuing its SM-100 seminar series for the month of October, welcoming a litany of guests to speak.

Parkinson

All seminars will take place each Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. in Room 117 of Parkinson Hall.

The first seminar, held Wednesday, Oct. 2, will feature Dr. Richard Johnston, a local gastroenterologist at Gastroenterology Associates of Columbus, where he has been practicing since completing his fellowship at the University of Miami/Jackson. He earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Chemical Engineering from Mississippi State University before pursuing his medical degree at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. After completing a residency in Internal Medicine, Johnston held various roles in the medical community, including chief of staff at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle. He will give a presentation titled, “Journey Through the Digestive System: Exploring the Role of a Gastroenterologist.”

Oct. 16 will see Ali Glasgow, internship coordinator for The W, giving a presentation titled, “Exploring Internships and Shadowing Opportunities.” The presentation will introduce internships and job shadowing opportunities in the region.

Dr. Mark Noble, a general dentist with Willowbrook Dental Center in Columbus, will speak Oct. 23. His presentation is titled, “Healthy Mouth – Healthy Body,” and Noble will discuss dentistry and the role of the dentist in helping to promote, achieve and maintain overall health. Noble graduated from the University of Mississippi Medical Center with DDS degree in 2001 and has been practicing general dentistry at the Willowbrook Dental Center since 2003.

October’s seminars will close out with Dr. John Griffin, a cosmetic surgeon, Oct. 30. Griffin’s presentation is titled, “The scope of practice of a Maxillofacial, facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon.” Griffin is serving as program director of the Cosmetic and Reconstructive Facial Surgery Fellowship Training Program at the Baptist Memorial Hospital, Golden Triangle. He also serves as medical director of Griffin Center for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Griffin Center for Cosmetic Surgery, Columbus Surgical Center and Chairman of The Griffin Foundation.

The course is being instructed by Dr. Ghanshyam Heda, professor of biology at The W.
