Prospective Students in Psychology & Family Science

The W's Department of Psychology & Family Science provides a broad liberal arts education for all students and seeks to be a model for the campus in how to promote learning by doing.

The psychology curriculum exposes students to several areas of the discipline: cognition, development, psychopathology, and social/personality. The psychology program emphasizes research methodology and writing for science.

Family Science students focus on family and relationships, and how to apply that knowledge to working with families. We focus on keeping families healthy and on keeping small family problems from becoming big ones. Because we focus on prevention and working with families at all stages of life, we focus on the application of what you learn in the classroom, which means that there are many career opportunities for graduates of our programs.

A Legacy of Affordable Quality

The study of psychology and supporting the family has been at the core of The W since the university was founded. Alumni from The W have gone on to pursue careers in counseling, therapy, advertising, and advocacy. That legacy of excellence continues today.

The university was founded in 1884 with the purpose of educating the under-served populations of Mississippi, and it is a tradition we strongly believe in to this day. The W consistently ranks as one of the best public universities in the Southeast according to U.S. News & World Report and Washington Monthly. Our commitment to an affordable education means we have one of the lowest tuition rates in the region.

Making Higher Education Affordable

Cost shouldn't be a barrier. At The W it won't be. We believe that the cost of a college education should not be a deterrent to your pursuit of earning a bachelor's degree. The W has kept tuition among the lowest in the Southeast. We offer that same low tuition to residents of every state, and a range of scholarships, and grants to help you pay for your education.

See for yourself! Our Net Price Calculators can tell you what you can expect to pay in tuition and the scholarships you are eligible to receive.

No Out-of-State Fees

We've eliminated all Out-of-State Fees, so no matter where you are from, you can get the same great education for the same price as a Mississippi resident. Really!

Scholarships Opportunities

Family Science Major Scholarships

Several scholarships totaling over $10,000 are available to students officially registered as a Family Science major each year. Scholarships are awarded based on different criteria such as program of study, need, leadership skill, attitude, or academic achievement. One of the larger scholarships requires an ACT (composite) score of 22, and another requires that the recipient be a first-year student. These often go unawarded. Thus, anyone meeting either of these criteria should apply because chances are highly in their favor. Applications are typically due in March, but can be submitted at any time.
