Speech-language pathologists are professionals who specialize in the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of communicative disorders. Communication difficulties vary broadly and affect people of all ages. Speech-language pathologist work in a variety of professional settings such as hospitals, schools, long-term care facilities, private practice, etc.

The Speech-Language Pathology Department seeks to provide undergraduate and master’s programs that challenge students academic learning, stimulate academic curiosity, and prepare them for clinical excellence. The Department offers the Bachelor of Science Degree in Speech-Language Pathology and the Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology. The Department is part of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

The undergraduate degree in speech-language pathology is considered to be pre-professional. Students who graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree are not eligible for independent professional work in the area of speech-language pathology. The undergraduate degree readies the student for further study at the graduate level.

The MUW graduate program in speech-language pathology is committed to offering the necessary coursework and clinical preparation that will qualify students to meet the academic and clinical requirements for national certification and state licensure. The graduate curriculum is full-time, intensive, and typically, five semesters in length. Upon successful completion of the program, students are eligible to sit for the national certifying exam (PRAXIS II) administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS), apply for membership in the American Speech-Language Hearing Association and state licensure.

Accreditation

The Master of Science (M.S.) education program in speech-language pathology (residential) at Mississippi University for Women is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, 2200 Research Boulevard, #310, Rockville, MD 20850, 800-498-2071 or 301-296-5700.

Facilities

The programs in Speech-Language Pathology are taught in the Cromwell Communication Center, the MUW Speech and Hearing Center, and various clinical sites in the surrounding area.

Department Strategic Plan
