Latha Viswanathan’s novel, Temples, is set in her native India. She writes from the point of view of an elderly archeologist, a restorer of temples, who reflects on the decline of traditional culture in contemporary life. His Indian-American great-niece, colleagues, a neighbor, two American missionaries, and stories from the Bhagavad Gita, as depicted on the temple, provide other perspectives. Viswanathan first came to the Symposium with her story collection Lingering Tide and Other Stories. She has lived in England, the Philippines, and Canada, where she worked as a copywriter, journalist, teacher, and editor. She currently lives and writes in Houston, Texas.
