Kendra Allen was awarded the Iowa Prize for Literary Nonfiction for her debut collection of lyric essays When You Learn the Alphabet by Kiese Laymon, who noted Allen “brilliantly animates the formal and informal education processes of becoming grown in America.” Allen was raised in Dallas and is currently completing her MFA in Creative Writing at the University of Alabama.
