Juyanne James returns to the symposium with her memoir Table Scraps and Other Essays, in which she tells of growing up in a Black community in rural Louisiana as well as the journey of forgiveness she embarks on when she returns to care for her aging parents. James’s previous book, the short story collection The Persimmon Trail, also touched on some of these stories through the lens of fiction. With memoir, James achieves a new level of intimacy and introspection. She is Associate Professor of English at the University of Holy Cross in New Orleans.
