Natasha Trethewey has served as Poet Laureate of the United States and of the State of Mississippi. She is well known for her poetry collections Domestic Work, Bellocq’s Ophelia, Native Guard, Thrall, and Monument: Poems New and Selected, as well as Beyond Katrina: A Meditation on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, a collection of essays, interwoven with poems and letters, which chronicles the land and people of her native of Gulfport, Mississippi. In her new memoir, Trethewey bravely chronicles her life with her mother and reckons with her brutal murder.
