Katy Simpson Smith returns to the symposium with her fourth novel The Weeds, the story of two women from different centuries who each study the plant life of the Roman Colosseum.
Born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, Smith now resides in New Orleans. Her previous novels include The Everlasting, Free Men, and The Story of Land and Sea. She holds an MFA from Bennington College and an MA and PhD in History from UNC Chapel Hill. She is also the author of the historical study We Have Raised All of You: Motherhood in the South, 1750-1835. She has taught at Millsaps College and University of New Orleans, is founder of the founder of the Write for Mississippi project, and is Core Faculty at the Bennington Writing Seminars.
